At Fitness First Sports in Kerrville, our goal is to help you move better—whether you’re walking the River Trail, hitting the gym, or training for your next 5K. One key to comfortable, injury-free movement is understanding how your feet move. Today, we’re breaking down the difference between pronation and supination, and how choosing the right footwear can help support your stride.
What is Pronation?
Pronation is the natural inward roll of your foot as it lands while walking or running. It’s part of your body’s built-in shock-absorbing system. Most people pronate to some degree—this is completely normal!
- Neutral Pronation: Your foot rolls inward slightly (about 15%) after heel strike, which helps absorb impact and distribute weight evenly.
- Overpronation: Your foot rolls inward too much, which can put extra stress on the arch, ankle, and knee. Overpronation is common in people with flat feet or low arches.
👟 Footwear Tip: If you overpronate, look for stability or motion control shoes. Brands like Brooks, ASICS, and New Balance make excellent options that we carry in-store.
What is Supination?
Supination (also called underpronation) is the outward roll of the foot during your stride. People who supinate tend to place more weight on the outside of their foot, which can lead to ankle strain, shin splints, or even plantar fasciitis.
- This is common in people with high arches.
- Supination reduces your foot’s ability to absorb shock, which means your joints take more of the impact.
👟 Footwear Tip: If you supinate, look for neutral-cushioned shoes with flexible midsoles and extra shock absorption. HOKA, Saucony, and Brooks offer excellent options—stop by and try a pair on!
